HISTORY

Sovereign Basketball Club was formed in 1982, addressing a need for Ballarat basketball to have a presence in the southern suburbs. Sovereign came about as an amalgamation of two existing clubs; the Wrens (girls) and the Chieftans (boys).

OUR UNIFORM

When the Sovereign Basketball Club formed in 1982, the clubs uniform was brown with yellow side panels and piping. The colours represented the area in Ballarat where the club was based; the brown to represent the lands around Sovereign Hill, and the yellow to represent the gold extracted from those lands. our uniform colours also needed to avoid clashes with uniforms worn by other clubs already in existence. Uniforms were made by parents of the players.

Around 1994/1995 the club looked at changing its uniform. A vote was held within the club to select the new colours from 3 choices: Purple & Gold, Navy & Gold and the Brown & Gold. Following the vote the club adopted the yellow and purple colour scheme (yellow singlets with purple piping and numbers; the LA Lakers look) that was worn for many seasons. Uniforms were professionally manufactured in Bendigo.

In the early 2000's our uniform manufacturers started to experience difficulty in matching the original purple colouring used in our uniforms, which prompted the club to begin thinking about a further change in uniform.

In 2005 club members Susanne and Mark Boswerger took on the task of designing a new uniform for the club. The result of their efforts is the club's current uniform which was unveiled at the 2005 Presentation Evening to great enthusiasm from the players and parents in attendance. The uniform was first worn on the courts in 2006, and in the opinion of many (both internal and external to the club) remains the best looking uniform in the Ballarat Basketball Association.
