Newsletter – July 2008

From the President:

On behalf of the Committee I would like to welcome all club members back to the 2008 Championship Season. I am looking forward to the club continuing its growth and success that was well in evidence during the 2008 Premiership Season just ended.

Highlights for the season just ended included the June Tournament in Ballarat where we had 3 teams competing. Our U/18 and U/16 Boys teams represented the club with pride and passion while our U/14 Girls under the coaching of Bree Sherwell had a great tournament. Three wins in the preliminary rounds, including two exciting overtime wins, saw them play in the semi-finals. This is the first time most people in the club can remember a team reaching the finals at a tournament. Unfortunately they came up against a very strong Ararat squad team in the semi-final, and although beaten were a long way from being disgraced. Congratulations girls!

In the season proper, we saw some great results! Five senior teams represented the club, and while none were fortunate enough to compete in the finals, each has been working hard to build their lists for the coming season. In the juniors we had 12 teams eligible to qualify for finals, and of those 10 teams played in semi-finals. Six teams won through the first round of finals to play off in Grand Finals, and of these 2 teams were successful in winning Premierships. Congratulations go to all teams, and especially to the 12 Boys Blue side coached by Steve Carthew, and the 18 Boys Red side coached by Alex Kimpton. Fantastic results!

I’d like to thank everyone who contributes to our club success, both on and off the court. From our hard working committee, the coaches and team managers who willingly give their time; the parents, families and friends who support the teams at training and games; and the players themselves who wear the Sovereign colours with pride....a very big thankyou!

And so on to the new season! We welcome back all teams from last season, as well as a new 16 Boys B Red team. The 12 Boys Blue premiers from last season are stepping up to take on A grade this season, and no doubt they will do the club proud. I would like to welcome all new players to the club, and am sure you will enjoy your time with us. Remember that What You Give You Shall Get In Return. And finally I wish all teams good luck for the season ahead. Go out and do yourselves and the club proud!
